Meta and TikTok aren't two identical ad networks with different logos. The choice depends on the customer journey, content capacity and goal.
Meta offers broad distribution across Facebook and Instagram along with a mature conversion environment. TikTok is built strongly around video-first discovery and a platform-specific content language.
Meta is often the most effective first main channel
Meta suits many companies as their first paid social channel because it combines Facebook and Instagram audiences, multiple placements, e-commerce integrations and highly automated optimisation. It can serve both demand generation and conversion.
Still, Meta isn't automatically the best choice. Competition can be fierce, creative fatigue sets in quickly, and audience activity may be concentrated elsewhere.
TikTok needs its own creative engine
TikTok can open up new demand and reach users in a different mindset. However, success depends more heavily on video concepts and continuous production. The ad needs to feel like part of the TikTok experience, not a resized Instagram ad.
If a company has strong organic content or an easily demonstrable product, TikTok can be a justified earlier test.
Compare these five things
- Audience. Where do they spend their time, and at what scale can they be reached?
- Goal. Are you after direct e-commerce sales, app installs, leads, or new demand?
- Content. Can the company produce the volume of video the channel requires?
- Budget. Is there enough money for both channels to learn?
- Measurement. Is each channel's role and attribution properly understood?
Don't split a small budget evenly
If the total budget is €2,000 a month, putting €1,000 into each channel can produce two entities that learn poorly.
Choose a main channel and set a clear, time-limited test for the other. For example, 70–85% to the main channel and the rest to a fixed-term trial is often smarter than a permanent 50/50 split.
Make the decision with data, but over a sufficient time frame
Compare cost per new customer, conversion quality, total sales and content production cost. The channel with the lowest apparent CPA isn't necessarily the most profitable if customer value or return rate differs. Also note that TikTok can influence demand that later converts through another channel.
How to proceed in practice
If a company is starting paid social from close to zero, Meta is often the practical first environment thanks to its broad audience and versatile formats. If a brand already has a strong TikTok content engine, or the product is naturally discovered through video, TikTok can be a competitive main or test channel.
Compare channels using the same business metric and factor in production cost. TikTok may require more new videos, while on Meta the same concept can be adapted across several placements. A cheaper media cost isn't a cheaper overall package if content production is significantly more expensive.
Don't make a final decision based on a single week. Use a sufficient test period, ensure measurement is solid, and also check total sales and brand search trends. Don't simply add the channels' attributed numbers together.
